122_Forest campus
CONCEPT & IDEA
In order to break up the perception of the existing BBIS school campus in Kleinmachnow as an isolated fortress and island in the middle of a forest, the forest will be networked across the campus. The result is an educational campus with an unmistakable and identity-forming forest character. The new “forest campus” complements the existing ensemble of buildings and forms its logical eastern extension. The existing character of the educational campus is taken up and existing qualities are strengthened to create an identity. The area is given a new “public” face in the east. The urban design follows the specifications of the development plan. The aim is the coexistence of architecture and nature. In such a situation, every human intervention and its extent must be critically scrutinized. Every new development carries the risk of damaging the character of the site as its greatest asset.
At the heart of the school's new appearance is the new central auditorium building in conjunction with the surrounding open space. The auditorium is surrounded by a new “forest clearing”. This generously designed open space is bordered to the west by the clearly structured building line of the new boarding school building, the extension of House 9 (former boiler house) and the new hall building. To the east, the “school forecourt” is complemented by the indoor swimming pool with residential buildings above.
Jury assessment:
The work is convincing in its urban and open space planning connection to the public and the community. The topographical gap between the individual levels (municipality and BBIS) is used in an inviting and flowing way to open up the BBIS campus. With the intervention of a shaping open space carpet of solidified and planted areas, spatial references are created inside and outside the security area, thus dissolving previous structural boundaries in terms of experience. By surrounding all the eastern buildings with this open space carpet, encapsulation is counteracted as far as possible. At the same time, the individual traffic of visitors remains completely outside the site with attractive distances to the old and new buildings. (...) The positioning of the new double sports hall and Building 7 creates a precise structural edge to the east of the campus on the one hand, while on the other hand generating sufficient open spaces between the boiler house and the sports halls. The boarding school in Building 7 is located at the interface to the public and will have and will have its own garden reserved exclusively for boarding students. This “hortus internatus” is particularly valued alongside the “hortus conclusus” at the library. (...) The choreographic relationships between buildings and nature, between the campus and the forest, between the community and the lake, all appear to be striking and attractive and enrich the offer for all users. Typologically, the architecture engages in a subtle dialog with the existing listed buildings. The cubatures of buildings 4 and 7 are almost perfectly aligned with the historical footprint, but are further developed and formulated in their own tectonic logic. The timber construction as a skeleton structure promises a light appearance and transparent spaces. The auditorium is staged as an airy pavilion with a sculptural building mass as an object in the landscape. This airy, attractive campus is particularly and gives BBIS an appropriate calling card.
